Old Man Saltbush
Atriplex nummularia cv.
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
This cultivar has been developed as a fodder plant and has higher a protein content and greater stock digestibility than the original plant. Farm plantings will hopefully provide some drought proofing once the plants become established.
A native of the dry areas of Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and West Australia, Old Man Saltbush prefers well-drained soils in an open sunny position. It is drought and frost hardy.
An evergreen shrub to 3 metres in the wild, this shrub is useful as a hedge or fence-line plant. The foliage is silver-grey, the flowers insignificant and the fruit is a fan shaped seed case.
It is a high nutrition fodder plant and early settlers used it to treat blood disorders.
Other quantities 100gm, 250gm, 500gm, 1kg, are also listed.
Native to Western Australia from the Goldfields to the Murchison, this highly drought and salt tolerant perennial shrub has an upright habit growing to 1.5m. Chatfield’s “stud De Kock” variety is particularly lush in foliage and palatable to stock. The species does not establish well from direct seeding however seedlings are highly successful. Analysis reveals approx 14% crude fibre and 52% invitro digestibility.
Note: ‘Direct seeding’ means to large scale broadcast sow the seed and then let nature take its course.
Buyers must advise if they need a Phytosanitary Certificate for import regulations (extra cost).
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
