A native of  the dry areas of  Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, Old Man Saltbush prefers well-drained soils in an open sunny position. It is drought and frost hardy.

An evergreen shrub to 3 metres in the wild, this shrub is useful as a hedge or fence-line plant. The foliage is silver-grey, the flowers insignificant and the fruit is a fan shaped seed case.
