Tassel Cord Rush
Baloskion tetraphyllum syn Restio tetraphyllus
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
The Tassel Cord Rush is a sedge of the coastal plain of the southern east coast of Australia. It prefers damp to wet soils along watercourse edges, dams or ponds and a cool climate.
Growing to 0.5 to 1.5 metres high it spreads by a slowly creeping underground stem (rhizome). It consists of separate male and female plants; the male flower is a round spikelet 2.5-7mm long with 6 tepals (means sepals and petals when they can’t be distinguished) and 3 stamens; the female flower is an ovate to elliptic spikelet 3.5 – 10 mm long with 4 tepals and 2 staminodes. Both flowers are a reddish-brown colour.
The plant is a bright green, perennial tussock with smooth stems and a feathery appearance from repeated thread-like branching along the stem.
