Desert Kurrajong

Brachychiton gregorii

A native of the arid areas of West Australia, the Northern Territory and South Australia, where it prefers red sand, sandy loam on undulating sand dunes, rocky ridges and slopes. It is drought and frost resistant and very hardy.

An evergreen tree growing 3 to 12 metres (10 to 40ft) with a spread of 4 metres (12ft). The stem is stout and tapering with rough, reddish-brown bark and a dense crown; the leaves are light green, three to five lobed, sharply acuminate (pointed) 7.5cm long (4in) with a long stem; the flowers are pink or white, broadly bell-shaped, occurring in the leaf axils in small clusters in summer; the fruit are broad pods.
