Cape Chestnut Tree
Caldendron capense
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
A native of the highlands of Kenya and Zimbabwe and the coastal forests of South Africa where it prefers humus rich, well drained soils. It does not like sandy soils, will tolerate drought (when it goes deciduous) but not frosts.
A slow-growing, evergreen tree (given sufficient water) growing to a height of 12 metres with a spread of 6 metres. The stem is stout, erect with spreading branches covered in greyish bark; the leaves are a rich green and oval; the flowers, which occur from spring into summer, are profuse, pink with maroon spots occurring in clusters 20cm across. The fruit is also unusual being warty, woody pods.
Cape Chestnut, with non-invasive roots, is suitable as a street tree. However, this tree suppresses other plant growth in its immediate vicinity and should be planted as a specimen tree in gardens.
Offered is a packet of 3 (huge) seeds and Grownotes to assist you to cultivate this handsome tree.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
