Jojoba or Goatnut Tree
Simmondsia chinensis
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.
The Jojoba is a native of the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona, California and into Baja California, Mexico, where it prefers rocky, sandy, barren soil receiving just 450 to 650mm (18-25in) of rain annually. It will tolerate full desert sun to light shade, reflected heat and frost down to minus 8C (18F).
A large, evergreen, slow-growing shrub to 3 metres (10ft) and 2.5 metres wide, it has leathery, blue-green leaves to 6cm long point upwards in pairs; flowers are yellowish-green, flowering is in April (northern hemisphere) and occurs on the female bush though occasionally both male and female flowers appear on the one bush. The fruit is an edible nut with a flavour reminiscent of hazelnut.
The Jojoba is valued for the oil from the seeds. The oil is mainly used in lotions, shampoos and conditioners because of its qualities.
Once established, this plant only needs the occasional deep watering in summer and fertiliser in spring.
Offered as a packet of 3 seeds with grownotes.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
