Deodar or Himalayan Cypress
Cedrus deodara
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.
The Deodar Cedar is a large, graceful evergreen tree very common in the large gardens of the world. Its popularity has been extended by various dwarf cultivars and foliage variations. Its habitat extends to the Western Himalayas, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Tibet and Nepal.
A fast growing tree in its first 10 years and to 20 metres. After that growth slows in height but continues in girth.
The leaves are needle-like 2.5 to 7cm long, 1mm thick and borne in clusters. Colour ranges from bright green to glaucus blue-green. The flowers are individually male and female but are carried on the same tree, the female flowers being held higher up than the male.
A member of the Pinaceae (Pine family) its foliage is aromatic when crushed and the timber is very durable but not good for items requiring strength e.g. chairs.
It has no major pest or disease problems.
