Kangaroo Vine or Native Grape
(This plant is NOT on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
A native of New South Wales and Queensland, this plant prefers medium to heavy soils in a protected, shady position. It is drought and frost tender.
An evergreen vine which will climb to 3 metres or spread as a groundcover to 3 metres. This plant is reminiscent of the European table grape with its woody creeping stem, rusty and tendrilled branches and serrate, cordate leaves (heart-shaped leaves with a serrated margin). The flowers are four-petalled, cream and inconspicuous in dense heads while the fruit is black and succulent. The early settlers used the fruit as a jam. However, the raw fruit causes throat irritation if eaten in any quantity.
