Coreopsis tinctoria is a native of southern USA where it goes under the name of the Plains Coreopsis. Its attributes include heat-loving and drought tolerance making it one of the most popular garden plants for semi-arid areas. Besides being very easy to grow, it is low maintenance and produces a very nice cut flower with a long vase life.
The American Indian once used the flowers to produce yellow and orange dyes and it is sometimes referred to as the Dye Flower.
The Dwarf Radiata Mix gives the traditional yellow flower with a red blotch at the base of the petals with a solid red petalled flower mixed in. The plant grows 30 to 45 cm (12 – 18 in) in height and flowers in Summer through Autumn. The flowers are 5cm across with scalloped petal edges and the colours are very bright. The plant attracts butterflies, bees and birds and will re-seed though it is not invasive.
Plant in full sun to semi-shade in well drained soils and it is adaptable to sandy or rocky areas. A rich, moist soil is not much to the plant’s liking.
Considered easy-grow for gardening beginners because of its low water and maintenance requirements.
