A native  of North America where it likes a well drained soil in a sunny position. A deciduous tree growing to 18 metres (60ft), it has discolorous, glossy mid green leaves, white to greenish-white male and female flowers on the one tree.

The fruit are evident in summer but do not ripen until mid to late autumn. Green fruit is very astringent and mouth numbing becoming sweet and edible when ripe after a hard frost or refrigeration.
