Pride of Madeira

Echium fastuosum syn candicans

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A large, evergreen, perennial from the island of Madeira that prefers well-drained soils.

Growing to 2 metres (6 ft) with a spread of 2 metres, the leaves are mid-green, dense, lanceolate and 20 cm (8 in) long. The flowers are a rich purple-blue, tiny and held on a spike 60 cm (2 ft) long in spring.

Pride of Madeira is tolerant of seaside garden plantings, temperatures down to minus 3 deg C (26F) after which the leaves are damaged.

A striking plant if you have the room to grow it.
