A native of the coastal sands and woodlands of South West Australia where it prefers sandy, skeletal well-drained soils in an open, sunny position.
Snakebush may be a small shrub to 1 metre high or a prostrate shrub to 1 metre in diameter. The leaves are simple, lance-shaped, sharp-pointed and up to 25mm long. The flowers are tubular and open to two lips, the upper lip being 2 lobed while the lower lip is 3 lobed. The flowers may be pink, mauve, lilac or rarely white, with darker spots in the flower throat. Flowering is in spring.
It performs best in dry climates and is unreliable in areas with humid summer conditions. It is drought hardy and will tolerate moderate frosts.
