Native Rosella
Hibiscus heterophyllus
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
A native of eastern Australian open forests from the south coast of New South Wales to the north coast of Queensland east of the Great Dividing Range. It is drought hardy but dislikes frosts.
One of the 40 species endemic to Australia, this shrub grows 3 to 6 metres high. The leaves are 20 cm long by 10 cm wide and linear to oval-shaped either entire or 3-lobed. The flowers are large, up to 15 cm across and of typical hibiscus shape and appear from spring through summer.
The flower buds can be made into a delicious jam and the Aboriginal people used other parts of the plant as a food source.
