Grass Girl
Kingia australis
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List
An Australian native once thought to be a member of the grass tree family (Xanthorrhoeaceae) but since placed in the Dasypogonaceae family and a genus of its own being the solitary member.
The Grass Girl is a native of southwestern West Australia where it has quite a presence, sometimes forming pure stands. It prefers well-drained loams or sandy loam in an open, sunny position and will tolerate drought and mild frosts.
The trunk is solitary, palm-like and reaching a height of 4 metres and is usually blackened by fire. The leaves, tufting at the top of the trunk, are grey-green to green, grass-like, initially erect then arching as they age. Spent leaves are retained on the plant as a ‘grass skirt’. The flowers, which are distinctive, are what divides this plant from the grass trees which have a woody spear carrying the flowers. The flower of the Kingia is carried on a short (40cm), stiff stalk and form a club-shaped inflorescence at the top. They are arranged almost symmetrically around the trunk. The individual flowers are star-shaped, creamy white, crowded and sweetly scented.
Like the Grass Tree, the Kingia is extremely slow growing and may take decades to mature. Despite this, they make excellent rockery or feature plants.
