Manuka
Leptospermum scoparium
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.
A native of Australia and New Zealand and a usually compact shrub growing to 2 metres high and wide. It is an evergreen shrub with mid-green leaves of variable shape between 7 – 20 mm long. The flowers are 1 cm in diameter, white, sometimes tinged with pink or occasionally red. Though there is little discernable difference between the Australian and New Zealand forms, the Australian form is much colder tolerant and will accept temperatures down to -7°C. It can be grown in full sun to heavy shade and is a good hedging or screening plant.
Honey produced from the flowers by bees is reputed to have excellent healing qualities and there are plantations for its production.
Propagation by seed occurs readily.
Offered is a packet of 200 seeds (including chaff) with propagation notes.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
