Tanglefoot Beech
Nothofagus gunnii
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
Native to Tasmania, the Tanglefoot Beech or Deciduous Beech is its only winter deciduous plant. It grows in alpine or sub-alpine regions and it rarely exceeds 2 metres in height. Seed is expensive and very rarely offered.
The leaves are simple, alternate, bright green, turning yellow, then bright red in autumn. They are triangular in shape with irregular minute teeth. The flowers are inconspicuous yellow-green catkins and the fruit is a 6mm capsule containing 3-winged nuts. Seed production is poor in most years but once in a while, a crop occurs with high germination.
Good for Bonsai, it is slow growing, will not accept temperatures below minus 10 degrees C and prefers peaty soils in full sun.
This plant is one for the experienced propagator/gardener.
Offered is a packet of 5 seeds with propagation notes.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
