A native of Central America, it is adaptable to most well-drained soils but does not like extended dryness or frost.
An evergreen tree to 8 metres with a spread of 3 metres, this slender stemmed, erect tree has dark brown scaly bark, white blossoms and yellow fruit. It has become naturalised in tropical Australia.
It should be planted in a protected, sunny position.
