A native of the coast of Western Australia where it is quite common among low shrubs and near coast open woodlands. Its habitat ranges from just North of Perth southwards to the Southern coast.
A perennial, evergreen shrub with rigid branches growing as a dense low shrub 1 m (36 in) high to a spreading shrub to 1.5 metres (5 ft). The leaves are mealy-white or greenish, 5 to 10 mm (1/2 in) long, oblong to almost round and sometimes lobed at the base. Flowers are in spikes or panicles and are almost inconspicuous. Flowering is most of the year though heaviest in spring to summer. The fruit is a deep red berry 5 mm (1/4 in) in diameter in Autumn. It is reportedly edible.
This plant can be hedged to form a very dense barrier.
