Kangaroo Apple or New Zealand Nightshade
A native of Australia, New Zealand and associated Pacific islands, it is a member of the potato, tomato and eggplant family. It, like them, has a commercial value.
A large shrub growing to 4m (12 ft) high with a spread of 5m (15 ft) wide on a broad range of soils, it is heavy frost and drought tolerant. The leaves are dark green, discolourous and glossy on both surfaces. The flower is typical of the Solanum family being a rich purple with prominent, bright yellow anthers and the fruit is an egg-shaped green berry that ripens to a rich orange.
The plant is used for a windbreak, privacy screen or understory planting and commercially used in some countries that extract a steroid used in the manufacture of contraceptives.
The Tasmanian Aborigines and New Zealand Maori ate the fruit as part of their diet. It should be noted that unripe fruit is highly toxic and should never be eaten.
