Smooth Darling Pea

The Smooth Darling Pea is a native of New South Wales and South-East Queensland where it is adaptable to most soils, tolerant of frosts and grows rapidly. Its habitat extends from the Victorian border and includes the south, central and north coast, the southern, central and northern tablelands and the adjacent western slopes and plains of New South Wales. It continues into South-East Queensland reaching Bundaberg.
An evergreen, 1-metre shrub; the stem is erect, smooth and branching; the leaves are bright green, pinnate with ovate to oblong leaflets; the flowers are pink, red, white or mauve, large and pea-shaped occurring in dense, terminal clusters; The fruit is green pods with a pinkish blush.
Flowering is late spring to summer and occurs over a very long period.
The Aboriginals used the crushed leaves to prepare a poultice for bruises and swellings.
