Billygoat or Kakadu Plum
Terminalia ferdinandiana
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
The Kakadu or Billygoat plum is a small to medium size, deciduous tree that is widespread throughout the tropical woodlands of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Preferring light soils in an open, sunny position, it is drought-resistant (deciduous in the dry season) but dislikes frost.
A medium tree growing to 8 metres with a 3-metre spread; the stem is erect with thick branches and finely fissured bark; the leaves are broadly elliptical to circular, blunt and 25cm long; the flowers are creamy, five-petalled, strongly fragrant, inconspicuous in terminal sprays in summer; the fruit are yellowish-green, ovate drupes to 1.8 cm across.
Aboriginals used the fruit as a food source (bush tucker) and medicinally. There is growing interest in the plant by fruit vendors, pharmaceutical companies and cosmetics manufacturers. The fruit has the highest source of vitamin C than any other fruit surpassing an orange by far.
Jan Sked of the Society for Growing Australian Plants reports that the fruit makes delightful jam, ‘one of the best jams I have made.
