Spider Lily
Tradescantia virginiana
A native of the eastern states of the USA where it lives in a broad climate and habitat range. A clumping plant with strap-like leaves and clusters of three-petaled mauve flowers in spring. The leaves are a fresh mid-green tapering strap that imparts a tropical look to a garden.
The plants grow to 60 cm high with a spread of 30 – 60 cm in a broad range of soils with semi-shade. Climate is equally as broad: from the cold of the Canadian Border to the warm northern Florida border.
This plant is fairly versatile being pest resistant, is suitable for moist or dry loam, clay, gravel or sand and it is tolerant of alkaline soils, drought, frost, sunny or lightly shaded exposure. It is also an effective erosion control.
