Bixa orellana
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
A native of Central America but naturalised on the north coast of Queensland, this small evergreen tree grows 6 to 10 metres (20 – 33 ft) in a warm climate. It bears pink and white flower clusters at the end of the branches. The fruit are bright red pods covered with very soft spines. The pods dry and split to expose the seeds.

These condiments are found in Spanish, Mexican, Filipino, Indian, Sri Lankan, Central African and Central American cooking. The seeds are reputed to have medicinal properties but no clinical trials have yet been undertaken.
