(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
A native of South Africa, this clump forming, rhizomatous perennial is very tough, tolerant of poor soils and thrives on neglect.
An evergreen perennial with spreading fans of stiff, leathery sword shaped leaves up to 60cm in length and 2 cm wide. The flower stalks which are also perennial and should not be cut after flowering, are branched and stiffly wiry bearing a succession of iris-like blooms throughout spring and summer. The flowers are 75mm across, white with yellow and mauve markings are short lived but continuously replaced. This plant is drought and frost tolerant in USDA zones 7 – 11.
This plant gets the name ‘Fortnight Lily’ because mass plantings flower then rest for two weeks before they flower again. They do this over a period of six months in their natural habitat. The other common names – Moraea Lily from a previous genus placement, African Lily from its origin but why Australians call it Vegeta of the Forest is unknown.
