Purple Leaf Hop Bush
Dodonaea viscosa purpurea
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
This plant is a native of New Zealand. The NZ form generally has purplish leaves (Dodonaea viscosa purpurea).
An evergreen shrub that grows to 2 metres with a spread of 2 metres, it prefers medium well-drained soils in an open, sunny position. It is drought and frost resistant.
This shrub has an open habit, yellowish-green, inconspicuous flowers and persistent green to red hops for which it is grown. The plant’s common name is derived from its habit of having a slight stickiness during a short period during the year.
The Maoris used the wood of this shrub to carve their weapons of war because it is so durable while the Australian Aborigine used the leaves as an analgesic, chewed the leaves to relieve the pain of toothache, chewed or pounded then heated the leaves to make a poultice. Decoctions and macerations of the roots were also used. In South Africa, an infusion of the leaves is applied externally to reduce fevers and it is also taken for stomach complaints. In Indian folk medicine, decoctions and infusions are still used while the Peruvians chew the leaves for their stimulant properties. Early Australian settlers used the fruits as a substitute for hops in beer making.
