Silver Princess or Gungurru

Eucalyptus caesia ssp magna

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of south-western West Australia where it prefers light to medium, deep, well-drained granitic soils in a protected, sunny position. This tree is regarded as rare (but not endangered) because its habitat is made up of small disjunct areas containing granite.

An evergreen, weeping tree to 15 metres with a spread of 3 metres. The stem is slender, erect (though often is not vertical) and branching with reddish coloured, flaking bark and a pendant crown. The leaves are bluish-grey, lanceolate, tapering and 10cm long; the flower buds are powdery white (silvery) occurring in groups of three; the fruit and flower bases are powdery white and the corolla coral pink to red. Flowering is in late winter.

This tree has several attributes that make it popular with gardeners. First, its shape is never formal and erect, but can lean, straighten then lean again; second is that the tree can be pruned to shape and it has even been seen coppiced; third, if you don’t particularly like its informal shape you can prune back to ground level and have the tree start again from the lignotuber. Other attractive features are the rich grey-green (silvery) leaves and flower buds and the large (to 50mm in diameter) pink to red flowers.

This tree is not fussy about soil type as long as it is well-drained, will withstand prolonged drought and is cold tolerant. Coming from southern W.A. it will grow in but doesn’t like humid wet summers but prefers a Mediterranean climate.

Offered is a packet of 20 pure seeds and Grownotes. Buyers should read the disclaimer below.

DISCLAIMER.

All Eucalyptus/Corymbia seed is harvested from the wild under licence and is sold as a combination of fertilised/unfertilised (chaff) seed. In many cases, it is not possible to tell the difference. The ratio of fertilised seed varies greatly and depends wholly on weather conditions prior to the seed set. Standard industry practice is to offer 200 seeds per packet which translate to something like 10 to 30 viable seeds (which have not been counted). If the above is not acceptable to you, please do not purchase any of the above seeds.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
