Scribbly Gum
Eucalyptus racemosa
syn Eucalyptus haemastoma
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
Researching this tree has led me to believe that it has undergone several botanical revisions. Eucalyptus racemosa has two subspecies, that of racemosa and rossi. Eucalyptus racemosa ssp racemosa grows from Pokolbin, in the Hunter Valley down to Port Jackson while Eucalyptus racemosa ssp rossi grows from Goulburn, New South Wales to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland.
An evergreen tree growing to 15 metres (45ft) with an erect, branching trunk with a smooth bark of white, grey or yellow with ‘scribbles’. The bark sheds in short ribbons while the scribbles are the result of insect larvae activity.
The leaves are narrow-lanceolate to lanceolate (ssp racemosa) to broadly lanceolate (ssp rossi), both leaf surfaces are dull green (concolourous) to 15cm long. The flower buds are produced in groups of 11 and flowers are white or cream appearing in winter or spring.
Koalas favour the leaves as a food source and flying foxes (a large Australian bat) collect nectar and pollen from the flowers.
The trees are referred to as Narrow-Leaved Scribbly gum (ssp racemosa) and Broad-Leaved Scribbly Gum (ssp rossi)
Offered is a packet of 5gm approx 3000 seeds (includes chaff) with propagation notes. Buyers should read the disclaimer below.
DISCLAIMER.
All Eucalyptus/Corymbia seed is harvested from the wild under licence and is sold as a combination of fertilised/unfertilised (chaff) seed. In many cases, it is not possible to tell the difference. The ratio of fertilised seed varies greatly and depends wholly on weather conditions prior to seed set. Standard industry practice is to offer 200 seeds per packet which translate to something like 10 to 30 viable seeds (which have not been counted). If the above is not acceptable to you, please do not purchase any of the above seeds.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
