Moreton Bay Fig
Ficus macrophylla
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
This fig is a native of the coastal areas of Queensland and New South Wales. Its habitat is known to extend from the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland to the Illawarra region (City of Wollongong) in New South Wales.
They are truly great trees with several in California known to have been planted in 1913 and which now have a girth of 13 metres (42ft), height of 24 metres (80ft) and canopy spread of 44 metres (145ft). Not a tree for the average backyard!
This fig is known to exist in two forms, the form depending on where the seed germinates. If it germinates in a tree canopy it takes the form of a strangler fig once its roots reach the ground. As such a single trunk does not develop. If the seed germinates in the soil, it develops a short trunk and large spreading branches and huge buttressed roots to support its massive weight.
This plant is often grown by Bonsai enthusiasts and a 40 year old Moreton Bay Fig has been chosen to represent the species.
Aboriginals use the fruit’s sweet flesh as a food despite the gritty seeds.
Offered is a packet of 50 seeds and Grownotes to assist you in their cultivation.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
