A native of the south coast, central and southern tablelands of New South Wales, Victoria, southeastern South Australia and all of Tasmania where it is adaptable to most soils provided they are damp. It will tolerate sun or partial shade in a Mediterranean or cooler climate.
A medium shrub to 3 metres (10 ft) but grows to a tall thin tree of 18 metres (58 ft) in Tasmania. Usually seen as a shrub with silvery, grey-green to dark green leaves with dense small hairs, oval-shaped and 12 mm long usually recurved (bent backwards) with a blunt point; the flowers are solitary, 15 mm in diameter, white, circular petals and numerous small stamens surrounding a central stigma; fruit are small woody capsules that persist on the shrub.
Growing this plant from seed is considered easy.
