Blue Tongue or Native Lasiandra
Melastoma affine
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List
A native rounded shrub growing to a height of between 50cm and 3m. It is related to the exotic Tibouchina tree and has attractive, prominently veined, rough-textured, elliptical leaves to 12cm. The flowers are 5 petalled, mauve purple, about 5cm in diameter with prominent anthers. Flowering occurs mainly in summer but some flowers are present most of the year. The flower does not produce nectar but produces an abundance of pollen for which native and honey bees compete.
The fruit is sweet and edible but will stain your tongue blue, hence its common name. The fruit splits open to reveal red to purple flesh with numerous small seeds. It prefers a tropical, sub-tropical to warm temperate climate, full shade in a protected position, well-composted, moist soils or a good water supply. It will not tolerate frost.
This plant attracts the Miskin Jewel butterfly, birds and bees.
This plant grows readily from seed.
Offered is a packet of 500 seeds with propagation notes.
