West Australian Christmas Tree
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
The West Australian Christmas Tree is semi-parasitic (it attaches itself to other plants roots and uses them to gain nourishment) and is, in fact, a tree form of Mistletoe growing to 30 metres with a spread of 3 metres. It is the only species in the genus Nuytsia.
Its habitat is the south-west of West Australia where it prefers light, sandy soils in a protected partly shaded position. The stem is thick and brittle with erect branches and a dense crown of olive green leaves; the leaves are narrow, thick, acuminate (pointed) and 7.5 cm long; the flowers are golden yellow, 6 petalled, profuse, terminal and honey scented, they appear in large, dense branching clusters in summer.
Propagation by seed occurs readily.
Offered is a packet of 10 seeds with propagation notes.
All seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
