Philodendron adamantinum

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

The seed of this RARE plant is not often offered. Philodendron adamantinum is native to Minas Gerais State in Brazil growing 2 – 4 metres (6 – 12 ft) in well-drained, sandy soil in rocky rainforests. Naturally, the habitat is partial to nearly shaded but the plant will tolerate sun if it is shaded from the afternoon sun. The habitat allows the plant to be grown indoors with excellent results.

Considered easy to grow with low maintenance, this plant has evergreen leaves that are pinnatifid (leaf edges deeply incised), 17 – 33 cm in length to 17 – 30 cm in width, the upper surface being sub-glossy dark green and the underside a glossy paler green.

An unusual feature of this plant is that at dusk it can heat its bicolour flowers (green & white) up to 18ºC above the ambient temperature to release a strong, sweet scent of 32 volatile chemicals to attract pollinating beetles. It has the normal floral spathe, green on the outside and creamy white within which when pollinated produce inedible bright red berries.

Philodendrons produce calcium oxalate crystals which are an irritant to the mouth and esophagus.

Offered is a packet of 20 seeds with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
