Dragon Leaf Richea
Richea dracophylla
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List
A native evergreen perennial from Tasmania where it likes full sun and a variety of free-draining, neutral to mildly acidic, moist soils.
Growing to 3 metres with a spread of 1.5 metres it is sparsely branched and often found with one main vertical stem. The leaf bases sheath the stem and the leaves are arranged spirally up the stem. The leaves are 22cm long and taper to a sharp, red, needlepoint. Dense flowering spikes appear at the end of the few branches. The petals of the small flowers form a pointed cap that falls off when the flower opens and a mature flower spike appears bristly due to the prominent stamens and lack of petals. Flowering is early to late summer.
Richea dracophylla will withstand heavy frosts.
