Propagation Smoke Treatment
Smoke Impregnated Vermiculite
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List
This smoke impregnated vermiculite is used commercially to propagate some of the more difficult Australian native plant seeds. It can also be used on many South African seed varieties.
While this may seem an odd process, it has been noted that native seeds germinated after the area was subjected to bushfire. Further observation found that seed outside the burned area that had only been enveloped in smoke was also germinating. Chemicals in the smoke were found to ‘break’ the dormancy that the seed was undergoing.
This discovery has allowed many species of plants that were simply impossible to propagate to be brought into cultivation. It should be noted that this is a seed treatment, not a fertiliser.
Offered is a packet of 5 grams of smoked vermiculite that you can sprinkle over your sown seeds, or soak your seeds in, to simulate a bushfire.
