White or Giant Bird of Paradise
Strelitzia nicolai
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
A native of South Africa where it prefers light to medium, well-drained soils in an open, sunny position. Encyclopaedia Botanica lists it as disliking drought and frost but my experience is different, at least with drought.
This plant is a small tree very similar to a banana plant. An evergreen tree/shrub growing to 5 metres with a spread of 2 metres. The stem is erect and flowering; the leaves are large and greyish with long petioles (leaf stalk); the flowers are blue and white with a chestnut red spathe. The flowers, leaves and plants are much larger than the orange-flowered Bird of Paradise and this plant is often called the Giant Bird of Paradise.
Offered as a packet of 10 seeds with grownotes.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
