Trigger Plant
Stylidium graminifolium
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
A native of Southern Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia from coastal to mountain regions i.e. from Brisbane to Adelaide.
A moderately frost tolerant/drought resistant, clumping, evergreen perennial spreading to 20cm (8in) and growing to 60cm (24in) tall. It prefers light to medium, moist soils in a protected semi-shaded position. The grass-like leaves (reminiscent of the Kangaroo Paw) are stiff, arising from a basal stem.
The flowers are pink to magenta, tubular, five-petalled, in spikes on a hairy stem. They appear spring through summer.
The genus Stylidium are called trigger plants because the flower has a trigger mechanism that strikes the insect probing the flower and thereby covering its back with pollen.
Offered as a packet of 50 seeds with grownotes.
