Century Plant, Spiked Aloe or Maguey
Agave americana
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
A native of tropical America where it likes well-drained soils in an open, sunny position. It is drought and frost hardy, very tough – a minimum care plant.
An evergreen, perennial plant growing to a height of 2.5 metres with a spread of 2 metres. The stem is erect and flowering; the leaves form a basal rosette of greyish, smooth, broadly linear and fibrous, with prickly serrate margins and a terminal thorn; the flowers are greenish yellow held on branches horizontal to the stem when the plant is about 10 years old.
This Agave is used as a laxative, a diuretic and an antiseptic. Water in which Agave fibres have been soaked for 24 hours is used as a scalp disinfectant.
