Atriplex hortensis cv Fire Red, Red Orache, Red Mountain Spinach or Orache Red Plume
Atriplex hortensis rubra
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
This ‘cut-and-come-again’ vegetable is suitable for garden, pot or planter culture in a sunny spot. It is salt tolerant, will withstand temperatures to USDA Zone 6 and will provide you with a tasty, bright salad leaf all year round. Further, the plant will grow to 2 metres (6ft) if allowed and will set flowers like a ‘Red Plume’. Unlike most salad lines, the leaf does not become bitter with maturity/senescence and retains its tasty flavour and seed can be collected for next seasons sowing or the flowers used dried.
In folk medicine, a tonic is made from the leaf for tiredness or nervous exhaustion and it is stir fried in Asian cuisine.
Considered easy to grow, it is best to sow them into prepared, sunny, well drained garden beds and cover them with 2 mm of soil.
Offered is a packet of 50 fresh seeds and Grownotes to assist you to grow this delightful salad plant.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
