Dwarf Fern Leaf Banksia, Rusty Banksia
Banksia oblongifolia syn asplenifolia
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
The Dwarf Fern Leaf Banksia, Banksia oblongifolia (previous known as Banksia asplenifolia) is a coastal plain dweller between Ulladulla, NSW to north of Bundaberg, Qld. it grows to 1-1-5 metres in seaside positions and up to 2.5 metres in forested areas remote from the sea. Its diminutive size makes it suitable for small gardens, patios and pot culture but it is not often seen in cultivation.
The leaves are 5-11 cm long with either serrated or entire edges. The colour is mid-green on the upper surface and light silvery grey on the underside with a rusty red midvein. It is this midvein that gives it the common name of Rusty Banksia. Flowering occurs during autumn-winter, the flowers being 5-15 cm high by 4-5 cm wide and whitish-yellow to a strong bright yellow though reddish forms have been seen. Banksias prefer a free draining soil.
