This small tree is a native of New Zealand where it prefers medium, moist soils in an open, sunny or protected, shady position. It is frost hardy but dislikes drought.
An evergreen tufted tree, it grows to 12 metres (39ft) with a spread of 3 metres (10ft). The stem is naked and erect; the leaves are long occurring in terminal bunches; the flowers are white and fragrant occurring in large sprays in early summer.
The fleshy rhizome may be boiled and eaten.
Propagation by seed occurs readily.
