Rose of the West or Mottlecah
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
A native of southern Western Australia where it prefers light, well-drained sandy soils in an open, sunny position. It is drought tolerant but dislikes frost.
This is an unusual Eucalyptus because it takes a tall shrub form, it is truly red flowering and it has rounded adult leaves.
An evergreen, tall shrub growing to a height of 5 metres with a spread of 2.5 metres; the stem is erect with sprawling branches and smooth, greyish bark; the leaves are silvery-grey, oval to broadly lanceolate and sessile (no stalk, the leaf is attached directly to branch); the flowers are large, bright red, appearing from winter to spring; the fruit are large, brownish-grey hemispheric capsules.
It prefers sandy soils.
Offered is a packet of 200 seeds (includes chaff) with propagation notes. Buyers should read the disclaimer below.
All Eucalyptus/Corymbia seed is harvested from the wild under licence and is sold as a combination of fertilised/unfertilised (chaff) seed. In many cases, it is not possible to tell the difference. The ratio of fertilised seed varies greatly and depends wholly on weather conditions prior to seed set. Standard industry practice is to offer 200 seeds per packet which translate to something like 10 to 30 viable seeds (which have not been counted). If the above is not acceptable to you, please do not purchase any of the above seeds.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
