Ficus racemosa
This plant is not on the Australian Weed List.
A native of Northern Australia, South-East Asia and the Indian subcontinent where it prefers rich, moist soils in a protected, sunny position. It dislikes both frost and drought but is most suited as an indoor plant or a bonsai specimen.
An evergreen tree (which becomes deciduous in a drought) growing to 20-30 metres (60-100 ft) with a spread of 7 metres (23 ft). The stem is erect, buttressed and branching and supports a densely textured crown; the leaves are a bluish- green, leathery, ovate (roughly oval) and acuminate (pointed tip), prominently veined; the ripe fruit are purplish, small, sessile (stemless) figs that grow in clusters from the trunk and main branches.
The Cluster Fig is revered by Buddhists and Hindus and plays a large part in those religions. It is sacred to other beliefs also.
