Medicago arborea has a multitude of common names. Besides those above, it is also called Tree Lucerne because it is a member of that family in a shrub form. The Lucerne group of plants are nitrogen-fixing plants and provide nutrients to poor soils.
An evergreen shrub growing to 2 metres (6ft) with a spread of 2 metres (6ft), its natural habitat is the Mediterranean basin though it has become naturalised in many parts of the world. The leaves are in the same trifoliate form (three leaflets) as lucerne except they are larger and tougher in construction. The flowers, which are borne from spring through to summer are scented with vanilla or sweet pea fragrance and appear in axial clusters at the end of the branches; the fruit is an interesting, circular curved pod.
This plant prefers poor, rocky, dry soils, will tolerate a seaside location (though not first line), temperatures down to minus 10ºC, and a full sun position. People of the Mediterranean use the young, tender leaves in salads, the mature leaves being coarse and bitter.
