Moluccella Cathedral Bells
Moluccella laevis
Molucella laevis goes under several names, Molucca balmis, shellflower and several cultivar names, Bells of Ireland and Country Bells. Its natural habitat is not Ireland but the Eastern Mediterranean countries of Turkey and Syria and the Caucasus.
An annual plant that is grown for its unusual flowers for the cut flower, dried flower and florist industry. The flowers are tiny and white but are surrounded by light green bell-shaped calyces (the green leafy part at the back of a flower) which remain after flowering has ceased.
A fast growing plant can reach 1 metre (39in) tall with a spread of 30cm (11in) but usually grows 60 – 80 cm with an erect, branching habit.
A member of the mint family, the domesticated cultivars are self-seeding, prefer full sun with regular water and are unlikely to do well in hot, humid climates being of Mediterranean origin.
Offered is a packet of 30 seeds complete with Grownotes to assist you in their propagation.
