Water Lily
Nymphaea pubescens
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
A native of Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, South East Asia, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh where it grows in an aquatic environment at temperatures above 15°C. This plant is common in tropical to temperate climates if the temperature is suitable.
An aquatic plant has erect perennial rhizomes that anchor the plant in the mud at the bottom of the waterway or pond. Water depth is not critical but it should be fairly shallow or the leaves will struggle to reach the surface. The leaf is round above the water and heart-shaped when below the surface. Above the water, the leaf is crenellated and flat to the water’s surface forming a typical lily pad. Young leaves below the surface are lighter in colour and have darker spotting over the entire leaf.
The flowers are white, large, about 15 cm in diameter when fully open. Colour can vary.
The common name for this plant is the Hairy Water Lily and the plant has hairs on the underside of the leaf and the flower stem. This characteristic is not seen when plants are viewed from the water’s edge.
