Chinese Tupelo

Nyssa sinensis

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of China and Asia Minor where it prefers rich, well-drained, damp, neutral to acid soils in a protected, sunny position. It will tolerate extremes of cold but resents drought for any length of time.

A deciduous tree that grows to 8 metres with a spread of 4 metres and is pyramidal in form. The leaves are large, oval and glossy green turning brilliant orange-red in autumn. Spring new growth is pinkish-orange (third photo) so it gives colour twice a year. This tree is the first to show colour in autumn and is regarded by many as the showiest of trees.

The flowers are greenish-white and are not the least remarkable. The fruit is small, purplish berries.

Offered is a packet of 15 seeds with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
