The Bluecrown Passionflower is a native of tropical South America and flowers all year round. It is a vigorous, semi-deciduous, woody vine that will climb 20 metres if suitable support is nearby. It is a popular and showy plant.
The leaves are mid-green, alternate, palmately five-lobed though three lobes and seven lobes are often seen. The base of each leaf has a tendril with which the plant climbs. The flower is complex, about 10 cm (4 in) in diameter, has five white sepals and five white petals which are similar in appearance, surrounded by a crown of blue or violet filaments, surmounted by five green-yellow stamens and three purple stigmas. Flowering is continuous.
The fruit is oval, orange berries 6 cm long and 4 cm in diameter. The fruit is edible and though it has a bland taste it is used to add colour to other fruit recipes.
