Spikey Grass Tree
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Plant List.
There are several forms of the Grass Tree, this form (Xanthorrhoea resinosa) is from the NSW south coast down into the Gippsland area.
Grass trees take about seven years to reach maturity and will send up a flower spike any time after maturity. Most often they flower after a bushfire goes through the area and can be made to flower by burning native leaves in a bucket or similar close to the plant so that the smoke envelopes the plant (it does not need to be set on fire).
Grass trees germinate fairly readily but are very slow growing and patience is needed. This particular species does not produce a trunk and is particularly suited to confined areas, small gardens or pot culture. They are known to survive for 600 years.
