Golden Penda
Xanthostemon chrysanthus
A native of Queensland and the Northern Territory, rare in the wild, it prefers light to medium, well-composted, well-drained soils in an open, sunny position. Being found in the rainforests of north-eastern Australia, this tree dislikes both drought and frost.
An evergreen tree growing to 15 metres (45ft) with a spread of 3 metres (9ft); the stem is erect and branching with a fibrous bark; the leaves are dark, glossy green, lanceolate to elliptical 15cm long with a short petiole (stalk); the flowers are a deep yellow, five-petalled and 1.2cm across occurring in dense clusters in the upper leaf axils in autumn through winter.
This tree was the floral emblem of the Brisbane Exposition and readily grows around that area.
