Showy Banksia
Banksia speciosa
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
The Showy Banksia is a native of the southern coast of West Australia between Esperence and Albany. It is adaptable to most well-drained soils, its habitat being the consolidated coastal dunes. It is drought, frost and salt spray hardy – one tough plant.
This plant can grow into a large 8 metre shrub in the wild but is a smaller shrubby plant in cultivation. The leaves are thick, leathery, silver-grey (tomentose) underneath and a rich dark green on top. They are divided into many lobes creating an opposing saw-tooth pattern each side of the midrib. The flowers are cream to pale yellow, 10cm long and the cones persist on the plant. This tree is a very good nectar source for nectar eaters and bees.
